Interview with Mars Finance

By Daniel Dal Bello, Director.

November 25, 2020 – 4 min read.

Mars Finance is an influential Chinese blockchain-focused media firm, funded in part by Binance and Bitmain founder, Jihan Wu. Mars Finance operate a significant online media business and news outlet primarily for the Asian crypto-market.

In this post, we share an interview by Mars Finance with Daniel Dal Bello, Director of Hillrise Capital.

Mars Finance
Can you tell us a little bit about Hillrise Capital first?

Daniel Dal Bello
We are a boutique research and advisory firm with a single focus on blockchain startups. We launched publicly at the beginning of 2020, but our team has been in the crypto-markets for several years. At the core of our business is our research reporting, however we are also very involved in community work and typically host semiweekly Telegram AMAs in our public chat room.

Mars Finance
What will you be focusing on from a venture capital perspective? Will Hillrise Capital increase its focus on Asian markets in the future?

Daniel Dal Bello
We are active investors in the primary market for digital assets. Until recently, the primary markets were not a focus area for us. The market conditions weren’t right and there was a lot of uncertainty in the space which didn’t suit capital raising for new projects – generally. At this moment and like many others we are very interested in the DeFi movement and the Polkadot ecosystem.

There are many great projects emerging from Asia and we want to keep an eye on this market in the future.

Mars Finance
What is the Hillrise Capital’s investment philosophy?

Daniel Dal Bello
We focus on companies that are creating real world value through blockchain technology. It’s not enough to have amazing tech and a great product if nobody is using it. We’re excited by companies that have the potential to create valuable and impactful products that bring this technology to the real world and outside of our small crypto-community.

“It’s not enough to have amazing tech and a great product if nobody is using it.”

Mars Finance
Investment institutions always are very sensitive to the market, can Hillrise Capital predict what the next wave of the market will be?

Daniel Dal Bello
It’s very hard to say what the next big thing in this industry will be because the pace of development is so fast. That’s at least in part a result of the largely open-source culture in blockchain. It was not a huge stretch to anticipate the growth of decentralized finance even in 2019. NFTs and gaming are undoubtedly seeing a big surge in interest and participation over the past several months. We anticipate that space to continue growing through the remainder of the year.

Mars Finance
Do you see Eth2 as a good investment choice for Hillrise Capital?

Daniel Dal Bello
We are very much interested in the continuing development of Eth2. Until recently the timeline had been uncertain but it’s now great to see a clear path forward and the Eth2 staking deposit contract starting to fill up. In general we are optimistic about the future of Ethereum and by virtue of that optimistic about ETH as an asset.

“In general we are optimistic about the future of Ethereum and by virtue of that optimistic about ETH as an asset.”

Mars Finance
Has the epidemic impacted your investment this year?

Daniel Dal Bello
Not as much as we might have thought. We knew that this was going to have a serious impact across the globe and prepared for that. The crypto-markets have not been too greatly impacted overall and we are seeing recoveries to near pre-COVID times across traditional markets. With all the uncertainty in the world, crypto-assets seem to be attracting a lot of due interest as we approach the end of the year.

Mars Finance
What do you think are the main reasons for the massive and continuous buying of BTC, ETH and other crypto-assets by mainstream institutions such as Grayscale? How does it impact your investment strategy?

Daniel Dal Bello
It doesn’t impact our strategy. Grayscale’s activity could reflect a more macro trend of increased interest in crypto-markets broadly as 2020 has developed. We are not in the game of passive large cap investing. We are focused on new startups with disruptive tech. For the most part the broader market activity doesn’t directly impact us or our strategy.

“We are not in the game of passive large cap investing. We are focused on new startups with disruptive tech.”

Mars Finance
Can you briefly introduce the team?

Daniel Dal Bello
My background is in public accounting with past experience at EY. I’ve also worked at Uber for several years prior. I’ve been involved actively in the blockchain world beginning in early-2017.

Raymond Reijnders is one of our analysts. He has studied Event Management at the Breda University of Applied Sciences and was previously a Brand Evangelist with blockchain startup WeOwn. He’s also the founder of CxCentral.

Our team is very lean, but we plan to expand in the near future – to be continued!

Mars Finance
Last question, what do you think is missing from the crypto market right now?

Daniel Dal Bello
A shift in public perception. I think there is still a significant stigma and lack of understanding of this world and the technology involved. In most conversations I have about this industry the default position for Bitcoin and crypto-assets is a very skeptical and standoffish one. Once we see broader adoption of some of the great products and tech in this world that common preconception will start to change.
