Interview with Nicolas Van Hoorde, CEO of Delta

By Daniel Dal Bello, Director.

December 20, 2019 – 4 min read.

In this post we share a conversation with Nicolas Van Hoorde, co-founder and CEO of cryptocurrency portfolio tracking app, Delta. Portfolio tracking services are extremely popular among followers of the crypto-markets, and the Delta app is one of the leaders in the mobile tracking market, tracking 6,000+ digital assets across 150+ exchanges. Delta has been downloaded over 1.5m times.

Nicolas is self-described as a highly motivated ‘product guy’ with a technical background, and has been working on Delta since its creation in 2017.

For this article, we wanted to catch-up with Nicolas to talk about the history of Delta, its rapid growth, innovations and recently announced acquisition by eToro Group.

Daniel Dal Bello
Nicolas, tell us about your journey into the blockchain-space, when did you first become interested in the crypto-markets?

Nicolas Van Hoorde
Truth be told, I joined the cryptocurrency markets quite ‘late’. It was March 2017 when I first started exploring different investment avenues and the crypto market immediately stood out – both from a economics as a technological point of view.

Daniel Dal Bello
In 2017, you founded Delta. What motivated you to build this type of product given the existence of already established competition like Blockfolio?

Nicolas Van Hoorde
Back then Blockfolio, without wanting to be disrespectful, wasn’t great. There was also very little competition. So Filip (a colleague of mine at the company we both were working at back then) and I were thinking: we can do this much better. So we started working out the concepts and eventually started building Delta. The rest is history. As we were able to raise the standards, it was nice to see that others, like Blockfolio, also started stepping up their game. So as far as there is a market for crypto portfolio trackers – it’s much better overall now!

Daniel Dal Bello
You first launched the app around the time of the 2017 bull market. What was that time like for you and the team, and how did you handle the rapid growth of the userbase?

Nicolas Van Hoorde
It was insane from all different directions. We were constantly working and living on adrenaline. Our numbers kept growing exponentially, the crypto community loved us as we were completely different compared to other companies: we released new updates continuously & qualitatively and we were super open and transparent about everything: our roadmap, our numbers.. We had a very close relationship with our community which had an immense viral effect. I remember very well that I was in my bed at 2 in the night, replying to support tickets, answering Reddit questions, getting organic reach through our Twitter and Telegram channels.

We were a three-man team back then. We were working 20 hours a day, weekends too. But I actually look back at those times very fondly. It was a roller coaster but being able to actually drive one of the wagons, was amazing. And it all helped us to where we are today.

Daniel Dal Bello
In November it was announced that Delta would be acquired by eToro Group (‘eToro’). We understand that you will now work with your existing team as a part of eToroX (the crypto-arm of eToro).

How does this acquisition fit into eToro’s strategy and what has changed for you in terms of development goals now that you are within this organization?

Nicolas Van Hoorde
Well, to set things straight. Delta has been acquired by eToro, not eToroX. We’re part of the group but we remain being our very own business unit, with the full team staying in our Belgian offices. That being said, we’ll of course explore synergies between other entities of the group. Logically eToroX comes to mind, as they are fully focused on crypto. But time will tell which synergies with what entity will come to live and in what order. Bottom line is that we want to do things that make sense for the users and our community.

Daniel Dal Bello
Will you continue the same revenue model (Delta Pro) from prior to acquisition moving forward?

Nicolas Van Hoorde
Yes.

Daniel Dal Bello
Looking forward, as the market has matured and with an optimistic outlook, what are you prioritizing for app design and development for the remainder of 2019 and into 2020?

What innovations and features can we look forward to now that you are within the eToro Group?

Nicolas Van Hoorde
Delta will diversify. Either vertically, horizontally or both. And by doing one of these, we need to add value to the application. Ultimately, Delta wants to grow to become a household fintech platform. But there’s still quite a long way to go for that.

Daniel Dal Bello
How have market conditions over the past 24 months impacted your userbase growth, revenue, or even development goals?

Nicolas Van Hoorde
Yes, definitely. We’re a cryptocurrency app, so we feel the highs and we feel the lows. Luckily, we’ve built a business out of Delta from the very start. Our recurring subscription model was the key factor in difficult times and also for the acquisition. It allowed us to stay lean & mean and also meant we didn’t have to distract ourselves or overcomplicate our operation by raising funds.

Daniel Dal Bello
Do you have an avenue for the community to have input into your development plans? Can we as users get involved in the ideation of new features and concepts for the app?

Nicolas Van Hoorde
Yes! From the very start, Delta launched a public forum via ask.delta.app for users to submit new ideas or upvote suggestions submitted by others. It was actually one of those things at the very start of Delta that made us stand out. A big part of Delta is inspired by our users and the community. And again, it’s nice to see that we set a standard here as many other applications in the space followed suit and launched similar initiatives.

Daniel Dal Bello
Thanks for your time, Nicolas.

Nicolas Van Hoorde
Thanks for having me!
